It can be very stressful when a dental emergency occurs. Here are some helpful tips.
If your child has a broken or chipped tooth we recommend:
- Rinsing the mouth with cold water
- Comforting your child
- Apply ice to reduce swelling if needed
- Administer over thec ounter pain medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin
- Offer soft foods
- Call our office for an examination and xray
If an adult tooth chips or breaks off you can place the tooth in milk.
If a baby tooth is knocked out remeber these key tips:
- Rinse the mouth with cold water
- Apply ice to reduce swelling
- Comfort your child
- Administer over the counter pain medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin, if needed.
- Try to offer soft foods
- Call our office for an exam
You should never try to put a baby tooth back into the mouth that has been kncoked out.
If your child experiences any lip or cheek trauma, we recommend:
- Rinse the mouth with cold water
- Try to comfort your child
- Apply ice to reduct the swelling
- Administer over the counter pain medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin
- Offer soft foods
- Evaluate for any tooth trauma
- Call our office for an examination
Tips to help avoid dental trauma:
- Wear a mouthguard while playing sports
- Wear a helmet while riding bikes, scooters, or fourwheelers
- Do not use your teeth to open things
- Do not run with any objects in your mouth
